3 Types of Meditation Therapy

Meditation is often used as a component of addiction treatment. It’s a type of therapy that offers many benefits, including the reduction of stress and the healing of negative emotions. As a result, many drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers include meditation therapy in their programs of recovery.

3 Types of Meditation Therapy

1. Somatic Meditation Therapy

Somatic meditation is often used in trauma therapy. This type of meditation therapy can be useful in healing scars from the past. For instance, your therapist will use psychotherapy, or “talk therapy,” to help you bring up past trauma. As you react to your memory, your clinician will guide you through various healing techniques to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety you exhibit. They may do so by teaching you how to breathe deeply, how to focus on relaxation, and how to meditate.

Somatic meditation therapy engages your body and your mind. As a result, you make work on simple yoga positions, dance, vocalization exercises, and more to help relieve emotional pain and anxiety.

2. Stillness Meditation Therapy

Stillness meditation therapy, or SMT, differs vastly from modern meditation. For example, it requires no use of mantras, chanting, aromatherapy, or music. Instead, it strives to achieve a state of simple mental rest.

During a session of SMT, your therapist will help you clear your mind of thought. As you do this, you’ll also work on relaxing the parts of the body. The result is a state of mental and emotional blankness, where your body is comfortably relaxed and your mind free from thought.

Stillness meditation therapy is used to manage and relieve high levels of stress and anxiety. It works on the principle of rest. Just as your physical body heals itself during sleep, your mind finds healing through the absence of thought.

3. Guided Meditation Therapy

Guided meditation therapy is probably the one you envision when someone mentions meditation. In the guided form of this therapy, you’ll work one-on-one with a therapist or even with a recording. You’ll listen to prompts that help you learn how to breathe, how to focus, and how to achieve a state of complete inner peace.

Guided meditation therapy is useful for treating a broad range of disorders, including addiction, mental wellness issues, and relief for stress and anxiety. This type of therapy has many benefits, including:

  • Stress management and reduction
  • Relief of chronic pain
  • Improvement in mood
  • Relief of depression
  • Early treatment for eating disorders

In a guided therapy session at Rockland Recovery, you may work in a classroom setting or alone with a recording to clear your mind and relieve physical tension in your body. A therapist may help you achieve your state of ultimate relaxation through a series of prompts that help you focus on breathing, posture, emotion, and sensation. This form of therapy may also use music, sounds such as nature, and aromatherapy to help you reach complete calm and focus.
