How To Stay Sober During The Holiday Season

person staying sober during holidays

Are you making a plan for sober celebrations this year? Staying sober during holidays is not easy, even for those who have a few years of sobriety under their belt. In many situations, you may feel overwhelmed and unable to overcome the temptations. Thatโ€™s what you donโ€™t want to happen because it can push you too close to relapse. At Rockland Recovery Treatment Center, we can help you turn the page on what youโ€™ve experienced to find the support you need through alcohol addiction treatment.

Staying Sober During Holidays โ€“ Create a Plan Now

Not drinking on holidays can prove to be a challenge if you do not have a plan to avoid doing so. That is, itโ€™s up to you to create a way for you to enjoy sober celebrations now, long before the holidays arrive. Here are some strategies that can help you with staying sober during the holidays. Any of these can prove to be the tools you use.

Create Sober Celebrations You Plan

One of the best ways to avoid alcohol during the holidays is to plan a celebration yourself. When you do this, and you host it in your home, you eliminate the risks of using because those substances are not provided or accessible. You can make it clear to your loved ones that this is something youโ€™re hoping they will participate in for your health and wellbeing.

Invest in New Fun Experiences

Another way to avoid alcohol during holidays is to find something to do thatโ€™s new and interesting that does not involve the use of alcohol. Thatโ€™s easier to do than you think. For example, make new memories with the children in your lives by doing something fun for them. Or, you can focus on more sentimental and traditional fun than modern drinking and partying. The goal is to do something different.

Take a Trip to Get Away

Take the time to get away for the weekend with a good friend or loved one instead of engaging in the activities you normally do. When the pressure is on and not drinking on holidays is going to be too hard to avoid, it may be best to get away from the people making it a challenge for you. You donโ€™t have to go to dinner with that uncle or cousin that will put you on the spot for not having โ€œjust one.โ€ You also do not have to be made to feel bad. This year, take a step back and focus on your health and wellbeing with the help of a substance abuse treatment program instead.

Stay in Contact with Your Therapist

There are times when staying sober during holidays is going to be a very big challenge. There are so many things that could limit your success. Thatโ€™s why you need to stay on track with your therapist. Work hard to be there for all of your appointments. Make sure you have plenty of time to dedicateย to therapy. Even if you feel fine, the closer you get to the holidays, the more likely there will be high-stress times that put you at risk.

You can avoid relapse by simply not drinking on holidays and maintaining your addiction therapy. We can help you with programs designed for your needs, such as:

  • Menโ€™s rehab programs
  • Womenโ€™s rehab programs
  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Partial hospitalization programs
  • Alcohol specific treatment programs
