Do Intensive Outpatient Programs for Addiction Work?

do intensive outpatient programs for addiction work

Many people who struggle with addiction don’t enter into a treatment program because they don’t have the time to devote to a residential treatment program. However, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) can provide addiction treatment on a more flexible schedule.

At Rockland Recovery, our day intensive outpatient program helps people receive the addiction treatment they need and deserve without entirely disrupting their schedule. If you or a loved one battles addiction and may benefit from an intensive outpatient program, reach out to our Rockland Recovery team today by calling 855.732.4842 or completing our online form for more information about how we can get you on the road to recovery.

What Are Intensive Outpatient Programs?

Intensive outpatient programs can be the most cost-effective solution for your addiction needs. They are also a good choice for those who have already been through a residential treatment program and need to fine-tune their recovery so they don’t suffer a relapse.

An IOP program can be effective if you are willing to commit to it and have safeguards in place, such as a sponsor and friends and family who live close by that can be there for you when you need them. A day-intensive outpatient program is not like trying to end addiction on your own. You receive the same treatment as inpatient clients do but have more freedom as you will be living at home instead of living in our residential treatment program.

How an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program Works

By choosing an intensive outpatient rehab program rather than an inpatient one, you will be saving a substantial amount of money by not having to pay to live there. You will, however, receive the same quality care. Living at home gives you more freedom to pursue outside interests and stay involved at work and with your social connections.

Outpatient programs only require you to attend for a few hours a day. There are both day-intensive and evening-intensive programs so that you can work around your other obligations yet stay on track with your recovery. This gives you the flexibility to continue living your life under your own terms with the support of friends and loved ones that may not be able to visit or stay in touch with you in a residential facility.

What to Expect in a Substance Abuse IOP

Although living at home, you still receive all the benefits of an inpatient program, minus the 24/7 care. Group therapy is the main component of an IOP for addiction and is vital in that you can spend some time with a peer group dealing with the same struggles you are. This also provides structure and discipline to your recovery process and teaches you how to socialize without alcohol or drugs.

An IOP differs from an outpatient program because you are spending more time at the facility attending counseling sessions, usually a total of nine hours or more a week. Some of the goals of an IOP include:

  • Staying abstinent from drugs and alcohol
  • Being part of a support system, such as a 12-step program
  • Recognizing that behavioral change is possible
  • Learning problem-solving skills
